Guided Tour of the Old Red Mill with Gary Irish
Thanks to a grant from Vermont Humanities, all levels of the Old Red Mill can now be viewed and explored. Jericho historian Gary Irish and videographer Jesse Keefe have created a video (long and short version) which not only shows all levels of the mill but also explains how the mill operated. Gary also provides a history of milling along the Browns River in Jericho.

Long Version (1:54:13)
The Old Red Mill (or Chittenden Mills as it was once known ) is an iconic beauty evidenced by the many photographers who visit to get a snapshot. It stands on the gorge of the Brown’s River, giving viewers a sense of the excitement of the water power once used to operate the mill. This grist mill at first operated with mill stones which then were replaced by the newer roller process. This was reported to be the first mill in New England to use this process.
The basement and second and third floors are not accessible to visitors. Yet, these levels provide insight as to what the mill looked like in the past and how it operated.
The videos have been distributed to all schools in the Chittenden East School District to be used as a teaching tool. They will soon be distributed to neighboring school districts as well.
