The Jericho Historical Society was formed in 1971 to restore and preserve Chittenden Mills.  Its mission expanded to that of preserving the rich history of Jericho, Vermont, and the legacy of Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley. The Society's headquarters is located in the historic Chittenden Mills (c. 1885), a national historic site.

What's new...

  • The Jericho and Underhill Historical Societies at the 2025 Underhill Memorial Day Parade:  Gary Irish toted our restored model of the Old Red Mill in his restored 1931 Ford AA flat bed truck as he did so many times in the late 70s and 80s.

  • In its February 15 edition, The New Yorker published an article about Jericho's own Snowflake Bentley:
The Man Who Captured the Unique Beauty of Snowflakes. The microphotographic innovator Wilson Bentley believed that “every crystal was a masterpiece of design,” by Chris Wiley

  • Enjoy exploring the "Old Red Mill" through this digital archival 3D model by Warren and Gary Irish.  See the mill as it would have looked during its original days of operation between 1885 - 1904.  This is the beginning of an ongoing project, so visit from time to time to see the progress!
  • In case you were wondering what the cranes were doing in our parking lot, there are several large boulders that have fallen into the riverbed over the years.  They needed to be removed in order to lower the water level, so the project to repair the riverbank can go forward.  The team from ECI is working hard to get the job done!

  • Our neighbors in Underhill celebrated a big anniversary not too long ago.  Read Gary Irish's, The History of the United Church of Underhill -
Celebrating 50 Years of Being United, written for the occasion.
  • The 1859 Mill house adjacent to the Mill, from time to time the house gets a sprucing up.  The most recent was a three month renovation project completed in October, 2023, to make the downstairs apartment suitable for rental.  See the Mill House renovation

  • Take an online tour of the Old Red Mill with Gary Irish.
  • Visit the British Natural History Museum to see a digitized version of an 1899 Bentley book of snow crystals.
  • Where did they go?  Beginning in the 1920’s, land was procured in Jericho for what is now a Vermont National Guard post. Did you ever wonder what happened to the folks who lived on that land?  Terri Hook did.  Learn what he found about where the families who lived on the land currently occupied by the Ethan Allen Firing Range ended up.
